Why is there so much fake shilajit?

Real shilajit is a natural resin that seeps from mountain rock layers and is collected by hand at high altitude, so supply is limited. High demand and a high price make it an easy product to imitate with cheap thickeners, caramel and colouring.

You do not need a lab to spot an obviously bad product. Try these at home:

1. The solubility test (water test)

• How to do it: drop a pea-sized amount of resin into a glass of warm water or milk and stir.
• Original result: it dissolves over a few minutes, tinting the liquid golden to dark reddish-brown, with little or no gritty residue.
• Suspicious result: it stays in sticky clumps, or leaves sand or sediment at the bottom.

2. The flame test (burn test)

• How to do it: put a tiny amount on a metal spoon and hold it over a flame, carefully.
• Original result: it softens, bubbles and puffs up, and does not sustain a flame like a candle.
• Suspicious result: it catches fire and burns steadily, which suggests wax or tar.

3. The temperature test

• In the fridge: real resin turns hard and brittle.
• In your palm: it softens from body heat.
• Suspicious result: it stays equally soft or sticky whatever the temperature.

What these tests cannot tell you

Passing all three does not prove a product is safe. Heavy-metal contamination and processing problems are invisible at home, and some fakes are made to pass simple tests. The safest approach is to buy from a seller who tells you where it comes from, shows lab documentation when they have it, and lets you ask questions.
